my french is a little off....isn't that the gates of hell? much more beautiful than i thought hell would be.

Yes, that's it: the gates of hell. In fact, it's a more dangerous place than it looks at first... between the two cliffs in the background, there's a big rock (which doesn't appear here because I took the photo from an odd angle) around which the sea is really rough.
